Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 Elections, has expressed his deep concern regarding the horrifying discovery of decomposing corpses in Abia State. He described the situation as “bone-chilling” and “extremely cruel.”
In a statement released on Thursday, Obi emphasized that this discovery serves as a grim reflection of the prevailing insecurity in our environment, which has continued to wreak havoc in many parts of the country, leading to the loss of innocent lives and adversely impacting the economy.
Obi praised the efforts of Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, for taking decisive action to combat insecurity in the state. He also shared a personal experience from 2013 when he was the Governor of Anambra State.
Recalling a distressing incident during his tenure, Obi explained, “I was accompanying President Goodluck Jonathan to an official engagement outside the country when I received the distressing report of approximately 35 decomposing bodies found in Ezu River, Anambra. I immediately returned to the state to address the situation and ensure order was restored. Autopsies were conducted, and an investigation was initiated before the Federal Government took over the process and requested the State Government to step aside.”
Obi stressed that the primary duty of any government is to ensure the security of its citizens and their property, as it is a fundamental element for meaningful development. He called on governments at all levels to redouble their efforts in the fight against insecurity in the nation.
“We must prioritize security,” Obi insisted. “We cannot allow our people to continue living in a state of fear and uncertainty.”
In a previous media address earlier in the week, Abia State Governor Alex Otti had reported the discovery of a substantial number of decomposed and headless bodies, as well as skeletons, in a market located at Lokpanta in Umuchieze.
