Bola Tinubu has sought intervention to oppose a motion that would result in the release of all his confidential records by U.S. security agencies like the FBI and CIA. He argues that the release of these records would have an adverse effect on him. The request for intervention was made by his attorney, Bryan A. Carey.
The request for his records originated from Aaron Greenspan, the owner of PlainSite, a website advocating for legal data transparency. The FBI had agreed to release the requested records in batches of 500 pages each month, starting in October.
Nigerians had been eagerly awaiting the release of these records to clarify long-standing controversies surrounding Tinubu’s background, including his involvement in a narcotics dealing case that led to the forfeiture of $460,000 in 1993.
Tinubu’s legal battles have also included efforts to prevent his primary opponent, Atiku Abubakar, from accessing his Chicago State University (CSU) records. It remains uncertain whether he will succeed in preventing U.S. agencies from complying with federal disclosure regulations.
Tinubu’s presidency, which is only five months old, has been marred by various legal disputes, including allegations of electoral fraud, perjury related to his Guinean citizenship status, narcotics dealing, and presenting forged certificates to the electoral commission, INEC.
