Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the foremost Igbo socio-cultural organization, has called on Biafra agitators to observe a 40-day ceasefire.
Ohanaeze has stated that this ceasefire is intended to facilitate the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the Factional Secretary General of Ohanaeze, has urged the ceasefire to commence from October 31.
Isiguzoro, in a statement he issued, has mentioned that there are ongoing confidential discussions regarding the potential release of Kanu.
Isiguzoro’s statement: “In order to advance progress in this matter, Ohanaeze Ndigbo is appealing to Biafra agitators to respect a 40-day ceasefire, refraining from any offensive actions, starting from October 31, 2023.
“Maintaining discipline among Biafra agitators is crucial to ensure the cessation of all offensive activities during this designated 40-day period.
“By doing so, it will create the necessary atmosphere for behind-the-scenes dialogues to work towards securing Nnamdi Kanu’s release. Ohanaeze Ndigbo emphasizes the significance of engaging with relevant authorities through diplomatic channels as the most effective approach to achieve the desired outcomes, in line with our Igbo idiom, ‘Every soup has a peculiar way of licking it.’
“We urge the Igbo community to be patient during this challenging period, acknowledging the suffering and hardships endured in the Southeast since Nnamdi Kanu’s imprisonment.
“As the custodians of our land, we assure ourselves and our people that positive outcomes are expected following the Imo State Governorship elections in November 2023. The release of Nnamdi Kanu will be a pleasant surprise for the Southeast.”
The organization has also made an appeal to individuals who may have been offended by Kanu to show forgiveness and prioritize the greater interests of Nigeria.
“The restoration of peace and security in the Southeast is of utmost importance and necessitates the collective engagement of all stakeholders.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo remains steadfast in working discreetly, rallying all relevant parties to achieve this vital goal,” he further stated.
