For residents of several communities in Abia State, travelling to work, transporting goods and accessing neighbouring towns have become daily struggles as deteriorating roads continue to disrupt movement and economic activities.

From Ndoki Road in Ukwa East to Obuohia Road in Ugwunagbo and Umuojima Road in Osisioma, residents say years of poor road conditions have turned ordinary journeys into difficult experiences, leaving commuters, traders, motorists and commercial transport operators to bear the consequences.

The affected residents have appealed to the Abia State Government to urgently intervene, warning that continued deterioration of the roads is worsening their economic challenges and restricting access to essential services.

One of the affected routes is Ndoki Road, which stretches from Obehie Roundabout and connects communities in Ukwa East Local Government Area.

A commercial motorcyclist who operates along the road described the daily experience of commuters and transport operators as distressing, saying the condition of the road had made transportation increasingly difficult.

According to him, the poor state of the road has not only made movement uncomfortable but has also increased the hardship faced by people who depend on it for their daily activities.

“We cannot use this road comfortably. We are suffering here. We appeal to the government to come and construct the road so that it will be motorable. Vehicles ply this road, and the hardship is too much,” he said.

He expressed hope that government intervention would bring relief to residents and improve transportation across the affected communities.

Similarly, a resident, Osondu Emelogu, said the deplorable condition of the road around Obehie Roundabout had persisted for more than three years, with businesses in the area suffering the impact.

He lamented that residents had continued to endure the difficult situation while commercial activities were being affected by the poor accessibility.

“We need the government to come and do this road for us. For over three years now, we have been suffering because of the condition of this road. It has equally slowed down business activities. We have been managing it, and it is giving us serious problems. We want the government to come to our aid,” he appealed.

The situation is also said to be challenging along Obuohia Road in Ugwunagbo Local Government Area, where residents described the route as almost impassable.

They expressed concern that the road, which serves several communities and provides access to the Ugwunagbo Local Government Headquarters, has remained in poor condition for years.

For the residents, the state of the road raises concerns about accessibility to the council headquarters and the difficulties faced by people who depend on the route for official, commercial and personal activities.

In Osisioma Local Government Area, Umuojima Road is another route residents say requires urgent attention.

Ogbonna Kanu, who spoke on the condition of the road, said motorists and other road users were finding it increasingly difficult to navigate the route because of its deteriorating state.

He explained that the road connects Ukwachi and several other routes, including Ekeakpara, as well as communities and areas leading to the residences of some prominent personalities in the state.

Kanu appealed to the government to rehabilitate the road, noting that its condition had continued to restrict movement and cause hardship for residents.

Beyond these major routes, residents also identified Ekeakpara and other adjoining roads as requiring urgent rehabilitation to ease transportation difficulties and reconnect communities.

They warned that the poor state of the roads could further undermine economic activities, particularly for traders, small business owners, farmers and transport operators whose livelihoods depend on accessible road networks.

The residents therefore called on the Abia State Government to prioritise the affected roads in its infrastructure development plans, stressing that good roads are essential not only for transportation but also for commerce, access to public services and improved living conditions.

For the affected communities, the appeal is simple: they want roads that can be used without the daily struggle, economic losses and inconvenience they say have become part of their lives.
