Rivers State Governor, Fubara Siminalayi, has issued a stern warning to Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, and the opposition, cautioning them against interpreting his decision to implement the presidential peace pact as a display of weakness.
On December 18, Fubara and Wike reached an agreement to put an end to the political feud that had gripped the State since October 30, 2023, following discussions with President Bola Tinubu.
Addressing members of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) from the 23 Local Government Areas of Rivers State during a solidarity rally at Government House Gate in Port Harcourt, Governor Fubara emphasized that his actions were guided by respect for the elder statesman, Mr. President.
He stated, “The resolution we are implementing is a political solution to a problem, not a constitutional mandate. I do this out of respect for Mr. President. However, if this is misconstrued as weakness, I will prove otherwise.”
Governor Fubara also highlighted the importance of his administration’s policies in positively impacting the lives of the people of Rivers State. He urged continued support from the populace and emphasized the need for peaceful compliance with governance rules.
Furthermore, Fubara reassured local government workers of his commitment to their welfare, including the implementation of the minimum wage and promotion, while also promising to address issues regarding the Consolidated Salary Scale and benefits for retirees.
In response, representatives from NULGE and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) expressed gratitude for Governor Fubara’s efforts in improving the welfare of workers and pledged their continued support to his administration. They also warned against any attempts to undermine the governor’s leadership.
