Once again, the Federal High Court in Abuja has denied bail to Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in connection with terrorism charges against him.
Justice Binta Nyako declined Kanu’s bail request, citing a previous refusal and indicating that his recourse should have been to appeal the decision. The judge also restricted visitation rights to Kanu for security reasons. Kanu had sought bail on the grounds of needing access to his lawyers and health concerns, including acute hypertension and heart disease.
The federal government opposed the request, citing Kanu’s past evasion of bail. Justice Nyako directed Kanu to pursue his grievances through the Court of Appeal. The federal government, represented by Adegboyega Awomolo SAN, is pushing for the commencement of trial on the terrorism charges. Kanu’s legal team, led by Alloy Ejiamakor, is currently deliberating on their next steps.
