BREAKING NEWS: Finland Approves Extradition of Simon Ekpa to Nigeria on Terrorism Charges

Finnish authorities have officially sanctioned the extradition of Simon Ekpa, a controversial dual citizen of Finland and Nigeria, to face terrorism-related charges in Nigeria. The extradition is slated for July 15, 2025, following a verdict by the Päijät-Häme District Court in Lahti on April 18, 2025.

Ekpa, who identifies as the “Prime Minister” of the self-proclaimed Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile, has been linked to rising separatist tensions and violent rhetoric targeting southeastern Nigeria.

The group associated with him has been accused of masterminding kidnappings, targeted killings, and the enforcement of coercive “sit-at-home” orders that have disrupted daily life across parts of the region.

His arrest took place in Lahti in November 2024 after extensive surveillance by Finnish intelligence services. Authorities allege that he used online platforms to incite violence from abroad, with several of his broadcasts reportedly followed by attacks on civilians and security forces in Nigeria. Additionally, four others were apprehended for allegedly funding and supporting his activities.

Once extradited, Ekpa is expected to be charged with terrorism, incitement, conspiracy, and other offenses against the Nigerian state. His upcoming trial is anticipated to draw significant attention, with close scrutiny from both local and international human rights observers.
