Abia State Assembly Passes Landmark Repeal Law and Advances Key Bills

The Abia State House of Assembly has successfully passed H.A.B 11, a significant legislation titled “Abia State Governors and Deputy Governor’s (Repeal) Law 2024.” This bill, sponsored by the Majority Leader and Representative of Arochukwu State Constituency, Hon. Okoro Uchenna Kalu, has undergone thorough scrutiny, including first and second readings, as well as consideration at the committee level before its third reading during today’s plenary session.

Speaker Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, announcing the passage of the bill, highlighted its importance in reducing the state’s governance expenses and redirecting resources towards development. Once signed by the Governor, the law will be officially known as the “Abia State Governors and Deputy Governor’s (Repeal) Law 2024” and will take effect immediately, starting from today, the 19th day of March 2024.

In addition to this significant legislation, the Assembly also introduced H.A.B 10, a bill aiming to establish the Abia State Cocoa Development and Marketing Board Bill 2024, sponsored by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Augustin Okezie, which passed its first reading.

Furthermore, H.A.B 9, a bill sponsored by the Chief Whip of the house, Hon. Emeka Obioma (Umuahia South), aimed at establishing Colleges of Nursing Sciences Owned by Faith-Based and Private Establishments in Abia State and addressing related matters, progressed to its second reading. The House assigned the bill to the House Committee on Health for a public hearing and further legislative actions within a month’s time.

The Assembly concluded its session by adjourning the plenary to reconvene tomorrow, Wednesday, the 20th of March, 2024, at 10:00.
